Python: Add patching capability

Final version of MR to add patching capability to git sources.

Incorporated change suggested by @burkeb543 in !132 (closed), which this MR supersedes.
!132 (closed) is therefore withdrawn as planned.

Now works regardless, whether called from build-bitstream.py or create-release.py.
